What is Orwyn? A guide for patients

Orwyn is not yet in clinical use. It is being prepared for evaluation with NHS services. If your clinician uses Orwyn in future, this page explains what it is and what it will mean for you, in plain words.

What is Orwyn?

Orwyn is a tool designed for your clinician to use during your appointment. It sets out a consultant knee surgeon's written guidance on knee problems: what is most likely going on, which tests help, what to do now, and when a surgeon is needed. If your clinician uses Orwyn, it will show them the reasons for each suggestion. It is not an app for you, and it will not give advice to you directly.

Who will make the decision about my care?

Your clinician will. If your clinician uses Orwyn, they will listen to you, examine you, weigh what Orwyn suggests and decide with you what should happen next. They can disagree with Orwyn, and when they do, their decision is the one that counts.

What will my letter and plan say?

If your clinician uses Orwyn, they may give you a letter or a printed plan written with Orwyn's help and checked by them. It will say what they think is most likely going on, what happens next, and when to get seen sooner. The box for your GP will tell your GP what, if anything, they need to do.

An example of the page a patient would receive on their phone: what we think it is, why, what happens next, what you can do now, and the note from the knee surgeon.

Who do I contact with a question?

Please contact the service caring for you. Their details will be on your letter. Orwyn cannot answer questions about your care, and please do not send health information to Orwyn. If you are worried about your symptoms, contact the service caring for you, your GP or NHS 111. In an emergency, call 999.

How is my information handled?

Orwyn will collect nothing from you: there will be no app, no account and nothing for you to fill in. The record of your appointment will belong to the NHS organisation that treats you, which will be responsible for it. Their privacy notice will explain how they use your information, and they are the people to ask about it. Orwyn's own privacy notice covers this website.
