From ortho, the Greek root meaning straight or right, and the Old English wyn found in names like Godwin and Baldwin, meaning friend.
The right friend. A surgeon's judgement beside the clinician, at the moment the decision is made.
Orwyn is founded and led by Dr Arj Imbuldeniya, a dual fellowship-trained consultant orthopaedic knee, hip and trauma surgeon with more than 25 years in orthopaedics and musculoskeletal care. He trained at St Bartholomew's and The Royal London, completed dual fellowship training in Sydney and Barcelona, is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and holds a Masters in Global Health Policy from Imperial College London.
He has been an NHS consultant at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London since 2015. His practice spans the full range of modern orthopaedics for the knee and hip, from biological and regenerative treatment through to robotic-assisted joint replacement, alongside trauma surgery. For years, physiotherapists and first contact clinicians across West London have picked up the phone or emailed him about a patient, and he has learned as much from those conversations as they have. The difficulty is that it only works for clinicians who happen to have his email address. Orwyn exists so that it does not depend on knowing someone.
The idea came from more than ten years of watching the same thing happen. People wait too long to see the right person, and the decision that shapes everything afterwards gets made without the surgical input it deserves. Orwyn is an attempt to put that input where the decision is actually made, rather than months later.
Orwyn is being built through the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme (Cohort 10), the NHS's own programme for clinicians turning frontline experience into NHS innovation. The programme published a short interview about why Orwyn is being built, here. You can find Dr Imbuldeniya on LinkedIn.
Orwyn is an independent company. It is not a Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust product, and no NHS organisation endorses it. Dr Imbuldeniya's NHS role is given here as background only.
Orwyn is being developed with NHS musculoskeletal clinicians, and is designed for NHS Trusts and the services that commission musculoskeletal care.
